If you're like most nurses, you went to a nursing school that didn't prepare you for how often you'd be starting IVs in the real world. Most schools attempt to cover this important skill over an hour or two during a single skills day, and if you're lucky you'll have the chance to trade one stick with a fellow student. This is hardly enough time to learn just the basics, and there are many schools that don't even give you a practice try at all due to insurance or legal reasons.

When you finally land a job and enter the hospital setting, they expect you to already be proficient, and the majority of facilities don't have any kind of IV training program. Nursing schools expect you to learn IV insertion and phlebotomy on the job, and hospitals expect you to have learned it in Nursing School. There's definitely an educational gap.
